A Little Bit of Surveying History
Biblical Times
Surveying was prevalent in the bible. Being a surveyor I especially like Deuteronomy 27:17-"Cursed is he who removes his neighbor's boundary marker. And all the people shall say, Amen!" I've met quite a few people that need to learn that verse. Numbers 34:1-12 has one of the first boundary descriptions. God made it very clear the importance of property boundaries. One of the first surveyors was mentioned in Zechariah 2:1-2-"I looked up and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand, I asked, 'Where are you going?' He answered me, 'To measure Jerusalem to determine it's width and length.'" Revelation 21:15-18 describes a surveyor measuring New Jerusalem. I'd be glad to run the transit for him!
Early America
George Washington surveyed over 200 tracts of land in his lifetime. He started at age 17 as the Culpeper County, VA official county surveyor and Surveyor General for Virginia. Most of his surveys were in the northern neck of Virginia. He also surveyed the property where Natural Bridge stands. If you go there you can see his initials that it is believed he carved as a teenager while surveying there. Thomas Jefferson was also a Surveyor General for Virginia and he was the county surveyor for Albemarle County. Abraham Lincoln was a surveyor in Illinois. His career only lasted a few years due to money problems. It's said that he had to sell his equipment to pay a debt. I think a lot of surveyors now can relate to that!
